I think so, so we'd all love to hear your thoughts on where the UK is heading in terms of productivity from a retail point of view.

Retail productivity in the UK has been evolving rapidly, especially with a surge in e-commerce and digital transformation. Physical stores are becoming more experience-focused to draw in customers.

Perfect. So at Rethink Productivity we work with lots of organisations to measure, task and process and drive efficiencies. Do lots of benchmarking. Have you got a view on the kind of fundamental components of productivity in a retail hospitality environment?

Speaker 2:

absolutely. In retail and hospitality, key productivity components include one efficient processes, streamlining tasks to reduce time and effort. Two employee training skilled staff perform tasks more effectively. Three technology use, leveraging tools for inventory, scheduling and customer service. Four customer experience satisfied customers lead to repeat business. Balancing these components is crucial for overall productivity.

And balancing those components must be really tricky. So how do you balance cost consciousness with driving service and customer experience?

It is a balancing act. The key is to invest in areas that directly impact customer experience, while finding efficiencies elsewhere. Here are a few strategies Automate routine tasks. This reduces labor costs without affecting service quality. Employee training Well-trained staff can work more efficiently and provide better service. Smart inventory management Use data to keep inventory lean, but sufficient. Focus on high-impact areas. Invest in customer-facing aspects that enhance the overall experience. By being strategic, you can maintain quality service without overspending.

In one of your previous answers you talked about technology, so streamlining process using technology. What examples in, let's say specifically, retail.

Speaker 2:

Do you have there? Sure? Here are a few tech examples in retail Point-of-sale systems. Modern POS systems integrate inventory, sales and customer data, speeding up transactions and improving accuracy. Inventory management software tracks stock levels in real time, automates reorders and reduces overstock and stockouts. Customer relationship management CRM helps personalise marketing, track customer preferences and enhance loyalty programmes. E-commerce platforms integrate with physical stores for seamless omnichannel experiences. These technologies can significantly streamline retail processes.

Predicting exact figures is tricky but generally the national living wage in the UK tends to rise annually to keep up with inflation and cost of living increases. Over the next five years it could continue to rise incrementally. Factors like economic conditions, inflation rates and government policy will influence the exact number, but it's reasonable to expect it to be several pounds higher than it is now.

Imagine walking into a store where AR and VR augmented and virtual reality help you visualize products in your home or try on clothes. Virtually Smart mirrors offer personalized recommendations and let you request different sizes or colors without leaving the dressing room Cashierless checkouts, sensors and apps automatically tally your items, letting you pay through your phone as you leave. Ai assistance Install robots or virtual assistants. Guide you, answer questions and provide product info assistance guide you, answer questions and provide product info.

It'll be a blend of physical and digital aiming for convenience and customisation and do you think there'll be a rebellion against technology and people will want to go retro? Where there's less technology, more people serving feels local.

Absolutely. There's always a counter movement. Many people crave human interaction and the personal touch, so it's likely we'll see a rise in boutique stores focusing on customer service, local products and a community feel. This retro approach could become a niche market, offering a refreshing alternative to high-tech shopping.
